Default 3.8 swaped to a 4.6, Is it possible?

what all do you need to do to swap out a 3.8 in a 96 LX and put a 97 4.6 single over head cam motor in. And how much would you charge someone to do all the work if they were paying you.. Thanks

Not worth it at all. You need motor mounts, K member, computer, and a lot of other stuff. Just sell your car and buy a 96-98 GT, it will be a lot cheaper.

screw the 97 non PI junk, if your gonna do a swap make it worth it, find a 4v motor and swap that in. if your going to go through all that trouble, a 97 motor is just going to **** you off after your done. just my .02

You basically have to swap almost everything in your car thats mechanical... Axle, transmission, entire motor, suspension pieces... everything. People have done it, but be ready because it's a HUGE project, and most people that do it, do it themselves as a project.

I agree whole heartedly, it's a huge projectand for most people looking backat it, not worth it. However,I did get a lot of satisfaction out of doing it myself. There is a tremendous amount of stuff that needs to be swapped out. (engine, transmission, radiator and fan, wiring harnesses on engine, computer, wire harnesses from computer to engine andCCRM, fuel pump, instrument cluster, throttle cable,PATS systemreflash, hydroboost for brakes, degass bottle, h pipe, dual exhaust with hangers, etc). That's what I remember right now but there is definitely more my friend. Contrary to popular belief, I did not have to change out my k member. I don't know where people get that from. However I did have to change out my springs, struts and shocks, driveshaft (don't know if I had to though), and sway bar.

I did not change out my rear end. I just put an Auburn Posi in the 7.5" and a rear end girdle on it. I don't plan on going that far up in hp to make an 8.8swap necessary.

If your friend has adonor car then go for it. If not, then it gets very, very expensive. My grand total for all of my swap items came well over 5 grand. I could have bought a procharger orjust got a GT but I wanted a project.

If you are going to charge this guy to do it, don't short change yourself. It's going to take you weeks to complete this project(especially if you have another job). Try to talk him out of it unless he has a donor car or a beater(to get around in) and deep pockets.

Hope this helps.

bluepony4.6 is right, i did this swap too, from a 1997 3.8 to a 1999 gt

engine trans complete witing harnes for the entire car, fuel system ecu gauges , door wiring and lock actuators i went with a cobra irs and full custom exhaust custom bent

time i have into the car easily over 100 + hours, and 5000+ for the swap!!!!!, things i didnt change, entire front suspension, steering collum,

problems i ran into,

when you remove a wiring harness from a car it gets pulled and bent, i have a proken wire somewhere in the headlights, and i am using a togel switch for the headlights instead of the stock light switch also my fan wouldnt turn on so i have it wired with an aftermarket wiring system with a thermometer in the radiator! ! if you want more detailed info on the swap i have a link to my swap

it would be easier to swap in a 5.0 instead of the 4.6, less parts to change.
