Default Is the Crown Vic 4.6 the same as the mustang 4.6?

My 97 GT seems to have developed a pretty good knock in the engine. Sounds like a rod. I'm considering replacing the engine. The local yard has a 4.6 from a crown vic. 55,000 mile enginefor $1,000. Sound reasonable?
Are the 4.6 engines in the vics the same as the mustang, same heads, accessoriesetc. I recently replaced the intake on my mustang and may transfer it to the replacement engine anyway.

How do I identify a PI engine? I believe that the heads are different on the PIs. Do they have different intakes as well? Thanks for the help.

Its basically the same motor except the intake setup. You will have to switch over intakes from your car to the vic. What year is it? I am not sure if it will be PI or not but I doubt it unless it is a newer motor. I say go for it, seems like a good deal.

Thanks for the quick response. I will need to double check but I think it is from a 2000. You confirmed what the person at the junk yard told me regarding the intake. It sounds fairly straight forward. As I mentionedI have a new intake on mine that I can use anyway (I had the infamous intake problem as well).

That sounds like a great deal. I think I might walk down to the junkyard and fine me a Vic police interceptor. Where I live, they always junk the new models.

Damn those intakes..

It doesn't. All crownvics, grand marquis, and lincoln towncars from 91 to the present (well 1990 for the lincoln) have sohc 4.6's.
