Default Machining help?

Im just wondering, When you take the block to the machine shop to have them bore it .020 what esle do they do? Like would they normally clean/machine the decks where the heads sit, maybe run it through a cleaning machine? and are boring and honing two different things?

I'm giving you a link to an engine shop. At the top of this particular page are a bunch of pictures of the machines and what they do. Below that is a little bit of info on what it takes to prep a block for assembly. Although it doesn't exactly tell you what each process does, I'm sure if you emailed them or googled a few terms you'd find what you're looking for. It's cool sh*t!!

They will first Hot Tank the block which dissolves the grime and cleans it up. Then they Magnaflux the blocks which is used to check for cracks etc. They will Deck the block next which strightens out the head surface for any minor imperfections(there are specs on limits to this with Mod blocks) Then they will bore it out to your specs this being .020 They hone the cylinders after the bore. This will help the rings seat properly. You can tell a freshly honed block because it will have cross hatches on the walls (45 degree scores crossing each other) You will get new freeze plugs and then it gets crated up with a tag.. Hope this helps
