Move side to side with your hand at the base AND with the shifter. Make sure you screw on the **** too. It takes some umppfff but it will pop off, just give it strong but steady pressure.

i got it off and the MGW installed! have not driven it yet but will tomorrow, man looks so sweet! feels good too, very positive strong feel.
was a pain getting the stock leather cover over the stick.....had to cut it with a razor to get her to fit. logic tells me there must be an afternarket cover to use!
thx for the help guys, ended up getting it off by firm slow pressure back and forth

The stock boot doesn't go down over the shift handle (though apparently yours does now), it just slides down the 12 mm stud and covers the whole thing...

Glad everything worked out okay. It will take a few hundred miles for the MGW to fully brake in, so it should loosen up a bit, at least from gear to gear. Centering spring should remain stiff as hell though. George is sending me some looser centering springs so I'll let y'all know how that works.
