Default Tire Size Question

Ran a search and couldn't find an answer to this question. I'm going to need new rear tires for inspection so I figured I can get a slightly wider tire since I have to replace them anyway. I'm using the stock 17x8 Bullitts and am thinking about putting either 255/45r17 or maybe 265/40r17 on the back. I don't want to go with the 275's because I was told therecould be sealing issues.Which would be the best fit?

yeah, my buddy ran 315's on 17x8 Bullits. It looked weird, but they sealed fine. 275's wont be a problem

if ur worried about fender, exhaust clearance issues, 275 is about as big as you can go with the 17x9's not looking "funny"

A 255/45 is as wide as you should go on 17 x 8's.

The issue isn't whether you can get it to mount or hold air. It's how much heat is developed during sidewall flexing down by the ground and exactly where it's the greatest when you're out there driving on them, perhaps driving rather hard. Too narrow of a rim tends to build more heat and may place the worst ofit in a portion of the tire that is less capable of handling it.

Somewhat separately, when a tire is mounted on a too-narrow rim it gives up some of the performance and response that would be there with a rim of more proper width.

Never could figure out why anybody would want to advertise more performance than was actually there . . .

I have 285's for my rear wheels and they look sweet. I have never had any sealing problems at all.

I would not go bigger than a 275 witha drag radial or a 265 on a regular street tire on the stock mustang rims.

315s, even on a 9 inch rim, would be a bit of a strech. You only run a 35 sidewall with the 315s. Hell, even on my 10.5s they just look "right". A 9 inch rim they would be buldging like crazy... and what would be the point? Unless your out looking for bad traction....

Its impossible to fit a 315 on a stock 99-04 GT rim.
