Thats the problem. Theres not a specific amount of shims to use as every rear end is different and every gear set will rotate differently. Thats why you use a professional so they can actually measure the stuff.

RE: installing gears .... help....
Here I come to save the day. I did my own gears about two and a half weeks ago. It is not a hard job, just give yourself enough time to do it right. Here is the link to the instructions I used: http://www.superstallions.com/tech/d...ars/gears.html
It lays it out step-by-step and is pretty easy to follow. It tells you the tools you'll need, as well as the tolerances to shoot for. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll help you out. Read through the instructions a few times to make sure you understand everything before you start.

On most stock 8.8's that I've done. I could use the stock shims with the ford racing gears (all I've ever done). Use the stock pinion shim and switch the right and left carrier shims around (one is .010 thicker). They have almost always came out with a very good pattern and from .007 to .014 backlash with zero noise or other issues. Be very careful setting your pinion preload, take your time. If you are putting in new bearings and races for the pinion use brass or something soft to drive them in. If you do have to use shims make sure the new shims total are equal to the old total.
1. Put the car on jack stands and scotch the front tires
2. Remove the rear tires.
3. Remove the e-brake cable from the calipers
4. Carefully pry the speed sensors out 1/2' (might need to spray)
5. Take off the calipers and brackets in one piece and use a wire to hold them out of the way
6. Match mark and remove the drive line (leave the other end in the tranny)
7. Take off the diff cover
8. Take out the pin in the center carrier
9. Push in one axle at a time and pull the c-clips then pull the axles out about 2'
10.Follow the directions from the other site.
This way you will not have to roll around in stinky fluid. The caps are marked with an arrow make sure you put the back pointed in the same direction. You will not have to heat the ring gear but you will have to heat the pinion bearing to install it (make sure the shim is on it first). Take starting fluid and clean, clean, clean before you start reassembly.
