Default PI swap vs Gears -> Who wins??

Since I got into this argument in another thread that was totally rediculous, maybe someone would rather discuss this than to call me names.

What would be quicker:

NPI car w/2.73 gears & PI swap
NPI car w/4.10 or 4.30 gears (maybe throw some drag radials in the mix)

The PI swap. The powerband of the NPI ends at around 4000 rpms, so even if you get into it quicker with the lower gears, there isn't as much room to play as the 5300 of the PI motor. Plus the PI swap will give you 50 more HP approx. Gears can't make up for that much power.

Also, if you're smart, you port the PI heads before swapping them into the car.

Sounds right, but I have enough trouble pulling thru 1st gear with 3.08's and some PI parts. I just get this feeling you guys underestimate how much having 3.24 gears play into those low 14 timeslips when compared to the 2.73's some NPI guys are fighting.

A 96GT Hardtop w/ 2.73s and exhaust was consistantly .3 seconds slower than my stock 98GT Conv w/ 3.08's in the 1/8th.

in the long run PI would take over, in the short run, like 1/8th mile i think you'd be about even, don't take my word on it though

I had 2.90 gears or something stupid like that in my 98. So i swapped then for 4.10 and its a incredible difference. My car stock ran a 15.2, which i guess is about average. i Havent ran it with just the 4.10 and winter hit so i decided to do a pi swap so i cant give you numbers but im hoping amazing.

I have a 98 with a pi motor and stock 3.27 gears. I ran a 14.0 in the 1/4. I think the npi car with gears and slicks could do better than that. Without slicks I think the pi car has an edge.

I think what you really need to ask your self is how far do you really want to go. What I mean is that a gear swap is only a couple to three hundred bucks if you do it yourself and about 5 to 6 if a shop does it, this is just for the ring and pinion and an install kit. As where if your looking into the PI swap, the question should be are you going to be happy with just a stock engine? If it was me I would save up and get some CNC ported PI heads a nice set of cams and a good intake, yes it's more money but you'll spend half of it to just have a stock PI engine if you do the swap with stock parts which will only get you 40 or so HP more then you already have. The swap cost me about $2800 to $3000 to do but I got all the good stuff and I'm happy as hell that I did. Now if find all the stuff used you could do it for half of what it cost me if your lucky.

holy old thread batman

doubt anyone here knows who i am talking about but many moons ago we had two site mods, one (acer) had a 98GT that was NPI and 4.30 auto, the (nanki) other had an 04 5 speed with intake and exhaust (before the built motor and blower) and If memory serves me correctly they acer used to slightly pull, If you were to go through the hassle of heads and cams I would think you could just upgrade to some better all around heads and cams

My money is on the car with slicks either way.
Tires are the biggest single improvement(0.4 tenths off your 60' is worth approximately 0.9 tenths in ET). Power without grip is a waste.

Definitely go for the PI swap, but add aftermarket cams and your results will be MUCH better. If possible, a PP is a great idea on the heads also, but not required for good results.

No doubt you will end up swapping in some gears before all is said and done, but a PI swap is absolutely worth it! Gears are normally the first mod I suggest, but if you are pondering gears or a PI swap... do the swap.

GOOD LUCK either way!
