Default what is the difference between a 4R70W and an AOD/AODE?

i see that on several websites and ebay sellers that the 4R70W and the AOD/AODE are listed as the same. would an AOD/AODE work in a 1996 4.6L 2V? if not, what would i need to get it to work? i am asking this because there are several places that you can get built AOD transmissions for dirt cheap, and in some of those places, i dont see any 4R70W's.
