Default Backpressure

Ok I've heard different things about backpressure on an engine. But Ialways thought it was bad to have backpressure.

If I have my cats removed, will it "destroy my valves?"

from what ive heard is that you want your exhaust gases free flowing as possible and as little back pressure as possible. where did you here that if you remove yours cats it will destroy your valves?

I thought so. And the guy who told me that was a mechanic at a hole-in-a-wall shop near me. Tried to pass off that it'll burn my valves to junk and make me run "too rich or too lean."

Ok For anyone who want to know back pressure is bad! The minimum back pressure is almost always optimal, BUT to achieve minimal back pressure can mean using a smaller pipe because of the scavenging effect, which actually helps to further reduce back pressure. You have to find a happy balance

*edit: and you wont cook your valves going catless.

LOL I was coming into this thread ready to call someone a dumbass for saying you need backpressure. I guess I got lucky and people are starting to learn things about cars on here.

You'll make maximum horsepower with an open exhaust port (zero backpressure) ......nothing to cause back pressure there. So remove every thing you can from the port on back

MM&FF did a test on this. No backpressure at all made the least amount of power. All of the mufflers they tried were within 1 hp of each other but the car lost like 3 hp from stock with no mufflers at all. 1 or 3 hp, who cares, I think everyone just needs to put what they think sounds the best on there cars.
