Default starter help

I just had my transmission fixed.. again.. took a junker's parts out and fixed my 5th gear..

Tonight we got everything back in the car got the K member lifted back up and went to start it and you can hear the starter motor running but its not kicking in..

We figured it was a bad solenoid, so we took the starter back off and hooked it to a battery out of the car and the solenoid does work when hooking the cabled directly to the solenoid, when hooking them to the starter it does not kick out..

We think its a ground problem, and tried some wire, probably 6 gauge or so to add an extra ground from the solenoid ground post to a bellhousing bolt. It started, barely, but fried the wire.

So...

What can cause a solenoid to not be grounded or not work? The ground cable to the starter its self appears to be fine...

What to do?

Car sounds badass with open headers by the way.. thats a different story though.. [/align]

well I fixed it... That thin metal plate that goes on the bellhousing that the starter actually touches had some transmission fluid or somethin all over it. I cleaned everything off with a wire brush on both that and the starter and it fired up.

Thanks for the help though guys!
