Installed Head & Timed Motor
Completely DOMINATED the workload for tonight.
Took off head, replaced damaged gasket, new gasket, head back on.
Did the bolt tightening sequence, 30 ft lbs + 1/4 and 1/4 turn is quite an awful lot of torque to be putting on your motor..lol..nerve wracking I'd say.
Next:
Timed the motor. Not hard at all.
Especially since the driver side was never untimed.
Lined the keyway on the crank socket at 10:30ish before putting head on. The timing mark on the gear sprocket was at 6:00.
Basically, got the 'marked' link on the bottom sprocket, turned the camshaft ever so slightly to get the 'marked' link on that appropriate place on the gear to the cam, and then while holding it in place, installed the tensioner.
Turned 4 total revolutions, NO BINDING!!!
EXTREME HAPPINESS!!!!

RE: Installed Head & Timed Motor
bump,, everyone else sucks.. lol
Question:
how do i install the crankshaft pulley back onto the shaft itself?
the pulley wont go on far enough to let the bolt grab the crankshaft with that small washer in the way, and even it does reach, how do you tighten it down instead of just turning the whole asseblyu?

if you can get the bolt in use an impact on the lowest setting. thats how i did it, or put the tranny in gear if it's a manual
edit: use a rubber mallet to get the pully on to get the bolt started.

I got the pulley on by hand as far as I could, then placed a piece of a 2x4 across the pulley's faceand tapped the pulley on (hittingthe wood)with a mallet until I could get it with the bolt. Im pretty sure that's NOT how you're supposed to do it but it worked for me...
You could go to home deopt with your crank bolt and find one thatsthreaded the same, but a tad bit longer and use that to get it started. You just want to be sure you get at least a quarter of an inch of threads screwed into the crank snout before the bolt even makes contact with the pulley. You don't want to catch only a thread or two and pull them out of the crankshaft...

RE: Installed Head & Timed Motor
I'm going to do the wood over the pulley method today when I head back out to the garage.
I do have another question though.
I've got the car in 4th gear, with the E brake set, but it's not hard at all to turn the crankshaft.
Do I have to use a gun to get it started? And hell, even when I get it started, what's going to keep it from just moving again when I have to torque it down to specs?

You probably know that already but I thought it was worth mentioning in case you didn't.
Some people re-use the old ones without issuesbut it can be dicey.
Good job on what you have done so far!
