Default gear install problem

Well i am about to get my gears either tomorrow or the next day but i have one problem...no one will install my gears. Why is that. They are master mechanics but they turn me away to go to the next person down the street. the only person i found was the ford dealership which charges 400 dollars just for install. how hard is it to do it yourself?? anyone know about this

I'd suggest a pro to do so. Around here in the Detroit Mi area, you can find places for $250 labor (roughly)... Are they including the bearing kit + oil? If so, 400's not bad. This is how one company quoted me:

$250 Labor
$135 Bearing Kit
$20 Oil/posi

$405 total

If it's $405 and you already have EVERY PART, that's a rip off.

From what I hear, it's a hard install. MOST guys on here wont do it themselves. If you do not install it correctly, you could damage the gear + some.

would definately leave it to the pros. if you dont install it perfect you will get whine. if the whine is bad enuff you can grenade your rear end. 400 for install is a tad high. but depending where your at it may be all you can find unless your willing to drive out of town. the cheapest shop quote ive gotten here was 350 and thats just labor (i have the bearing kit, diff fluid, friction modifier, and the gears already). so im about to give up the search for a decent price and just have them installed someplace i feel comfortable with and suffer the rape pains later.

the install can be tricky and time consuming for someone whose not that experienced...which may be why they turned you away.

Put it this way:

If you have to ask how hard it is, it probably isn't something you should be doing yourself.

I've done a few rear ends, so I'm doing the install myself. Once you do it once, it's pretty easy. It's more of a pain in the *** time consuming job than an actual difficult job. Setting the pinion depth and backlash is the most annoying part. The 8.8 rear isn't that difficult to work with, though. I've done mostly GM rears (I'm a GM mechanic) and I've felt they're a bit tougher.

But I wouldn't try it on my car for my first time. If you have the opportunity, definately try do it with someone who could do it for your first time or two.

400 is nutty.. that makes it real tempting to just try and do the work on your own.

i knowa friend who charges $250 to do them, and all he messes with is mustangs. now the reason most people dont do it themselves is because if not done right, itll whine and ive also seen it lock somebodys rear end up. then your in a ball park to need a new rear end, or get the gears redone which are $150 again and then. if ford is the only place that will do it pro wise then just pay the money, or call around in a diff town and get prices, most places will charge 300-350. gears arent an easy job.

I had ahard time finding a shop to do the gears on my 2000 GT as well. Most places aren't equipped to do it. I have also heard that it is a pain in the **s in these cars. I did end up finding a shop 30 minutes from my house to do the install. It cost me $175. That was labor. I had the gears and oil.

I installed my own gears this winter. It really wasn't that hard. You just need to have the right tools. There is a really good write up in the forum that i followed. I will see if i can find it for you. They spelled everything out very clear. So are i have not had one bit of trouble with my new gears.

I was getting quoted about ($500-600 labor only) from all the local speed shops. Eventually I found a differential specialist that did the install for $250.I would try looking up is there is a differntial specialist in your area or a transmission shop that does rear end work.

Difference is the speed shops were charging for 5-6 hours labor. The shop i took it to does nothing but rebuild differntials, they knocked it out in half the time cause they knew what they were doing.
