Noise from steering column
Good morning,
I have been hearing a rattle/tap noise coming from my steering column whenever I hit certain bumps. It only seems to happen when mydriver sidefrontwheel hits a manhole or small bump. It has been driving me crazy cuz I couldn't pinpoint the sound. I finally had my mechanic friend look at it and he told me that there are two pieces to the shaft that goes down into the steering box and some type of shaft cover should go over where the two pieces connect. Because that cover was not over the connection it is believed to cause the sound coming from the connection.
Here seems to be the issue...because I had my LT headers done (BBK), the clearance for the steering shaft is minimal and the piece that slides over the connection could not be put back in place because it would rub against the headers and therefore was left in a position that would not obstruct the shaftdue to theheader. My buddy told me the shaft connector is still on the shaft but is up higher on the shaft (hence causing some play)so it didn't cause any steering issues.
Now I didn't see any of this for myself so I am purely going off of what my buddy saw when he put it up on the lift.
My question is...has anyone else had the same issue? And if so...is there any after market steering shaft (maybe a one piece unit) that may solve this issue?
I can drive it just fine but I don't like the rattle when I hit the bumps as well as the bit of play in the wheel (not too bad but noticeable to me).
Any/all help is appreciated.
