exhaust leak and check engine light

exhaust leak and check engine light
i went to get my car 96 gt inspected today and they said i had an exhaust leak,and that my check engine light bulb is out, they said htat when you start the car it comes on than goes off and mine don't do that, there are no codes where it should be on but he said i have to get it fixed first, does anyone know how i can fix either of these two problems
