Alright guys...since my head gasket blew and i think my rings are bad on my 4.6 i've decided to do the 5.4 swap. i picked up a 5.4 out of a truck that cought on fire for $300!!..


heres what i gotfor the build upso far

PI heads
xe278ah-13 comp cams
centerforce dual friction
headers (for a 4.6 but i plan on trying to modify them to fit the 5.4)

still what i need/want to get
sct tuner
pistons and rings
.550 lift valve springs


now my question is what pistons and rings should i go with...i know i am gonna need something with some valve reliefs for that cam...and i also want some pretty good rings and definitatly forged pistons...i plan on spraying this motor!!

so what do you guys suggest?

kellog, cp, diamond, etc for pistons - alot of people run keith black

plasma moly rings - kellog or clevite

Pistons arn't the weak point in that engine the rods are. The pistons will outlast both the rods and crank with a proper tune. Unless your pistons are damaged just take the block to a machine shop and have them flycut them.

do you think the stock pistons will handle a 150 shot??
what is the stock shortblock capable of handling horsepower wise?

go ahead and replace the pistons... stupid to half assed build a motor

The rods have extra stress because of the longer stroke of the 5.4. I would look at pistons and rods at a minimum. I've heard of people running stock cranks but the rods and pistons are a must.

Hmmmm about that... Whatever was stuffed in there at the Windsor plant. I went the cheap guy way, the engine only has 12k miles on it so I'm hoping to get some miles out of it before it blows.

lol...yea...well since my funds are kinda low right now and my 4.6 is gonna blow any day now i think i might just use the stock shortblock and throw in some bad *** rings and fly cut the pistons....
might just have to chill out on the nitrous...lol
