i have the exact same noise and its progressively getting worse. i have reason to believe that the noise is rear differential based. or at least in that area. i have free play/slack in my drive shaft as well. it seems that as i release my clutch and start to move forward that the noise happens right as my pinion and ring gear are meshing together. perhaps they are pulling apart? i have not checked my control arms, but that MIGHT be the problem.

it could be your gears, there was a thread earlier about the same kind of problem your explaining. the OP had a vid of it on his car, where he would reverse and then go forward then it would make that noise your explaining. mine sounds like its from the back of the transmission, or around in that area. its frustrating as hell trying to track it down.

My rear has about the same amount of play, and been having a similar noise but I'm pretty positive on mine its the control arm bushings. I didnt discover what it was really doing untill I recorded this, hope it helps some way.

i don't know if i've explained my problem well enough, because there is not a problem when going forward to reverse. Its all when i'm turning especially sharp, usually noticable more at slow speeds. its a shuddering, clanking sound that sounds like its coming from the area around the front of the driveshaft. is there a bearing or bushing where the rear output shaft comes out of the tranny? would this being worn out cause the driveshaft to move up and down? the part that gets me is that its not consistant, and it only really clanks when i'm turning either way, but you can hear it a little at slow speeds.

well the uppers control one way and the loweres kinda control the other way as in, Front-to-back and side to side I forget which does what. But when I was trying to figure mine out I had several people ask if it was side to side and if so it was more than likely the rear or the rear bearings.

Also how many miles do you have and have you had it jacked up and pushed/pulled/tured on the axle/wheels to see if theres too much play. Ive been told around a 1/4" is normal play for the rear but I know mine never was that bad and is getting worn as well.

i've got about 63,xxx on mine. I've had it up to yank around on the driveshaft, trans (to check if it was the mounts), and the rear end, but i haven't checked the wheel bearings. that seems like another good idea, i'll check that tomorrow.

if your going real slow in gear say 1st or 2nd for example letting the car move itself with the engine torque at idle speeds lol if you know what i mean. then the car will bog down sometimes causing a bounce in the drive train creating this noise. meaning when it bogs down the torque is alot less causing some play in the moving parts. then when it torques up again all the mechanisims rebound back and produce the clunking noise u are hearing.

haha i hope you understand what i'm trying to say, if not i'll try and explain it a different way. When i drive my dads car 03 gt it makes this same clunking noise when going slow with my foot off the gas. make sense????

that makes complete sense, but it even happens when i have the clutch in. but also remember it happens when i turn more than in any other situation. i wish the OP would chime in and help out cause it seemed like he was experiencing the same thing. it sounds almost like something clanking on the floor under the center console, which would be around the back side of the tranny. which leads me to believe its maybe the bushing or bearing on the tail shaft allowing up and down play there. hopefully its some control arm problems so that i don't have to mess with the trans
