h is shaped like an H and x is shaped like an X. basically h-pipe connects with a small pipe and X-pipe comes together

Actually, headers, &amp; a mid-pipe help your car breathe better, so it WILL be louder at WOT. You will have fewer cats restricting the air flow, so it only makes sense that your exhaust will be louder. My setup is: Bassani mid-length headers, Bassani x-pipe w/high flow cats, &amp; Magnaflow cat-back. This is a loud setup. A friend of a friend has this EXACT setup on his Stang, &amp; it's pushing something like 129 decibels at WOT<IMG src=smileys/smiley8.gif border="0">. Some might call that obnoxiously loud, but I call it scaring away the meek.</P>

Each application also changes the sound a bit too. Just a cat-back is quieter, because it is still muffled by 4 cats. Change the mid-pipe, and you cut the # of cat's at least in 1/2, plus based on the design (X or H) you will produce either aNASCAR, or MUSCLE car sound. Change the headers, &amp; well just a louder verion of the latter w/a little smoother flow, &amp; a lot more HP.</P>

As I've said before...you'll gain MORE lowend ft-lbs w/the H-pipe than hp w/the X-pipe. Put a 4.10 in the rear end, and it'll not matter which one u choose so much as the sound you prefer. X = NASCAR. H=MUSCLE CAR. Both sound good with the proper applications of catbacks. The x-pipe <U>needs</U> a straight through system like Magnaflow, or you are in for a #$%@ sound (i.e. Flowmasters &amp; x-pipes don't match). If you don't want you car louder, don't get any other exhaust applications.</P><edited><editID>GSXRIntensity</editID><editDate>37921.0521180556</editDate></edited>

I have a Borla Cat Back exhaust system on my 98 Mustang GT and its not loud, but its not quiet either. I'm happy with it but I would never complain about my stang being too loud.

Dan why are you saying aftermarket cats and headers will make a car quiter? Increasing flow generally mean increasing volume, although not alwasy. In my 20 years of playing wiht cars i have never heard headers quit a car down.
