i have a 96 GT and my radiator fan took a poop on me. Im running a 180* thermostat. I bought an aftermarket electric fan, which only has 2 wires coming from it, and obviously the electric fans on our cars run with 3 wires. Is there anyone who has wired an aftermarket fan up to worl without using a switch inside the car? Right now i have the ground just wired straight up to the connector from the old fan wires, and i have the power wire on a relay with a switch inside the car for now. Anyone ever done this without a switch and can someone tell me what the other wire is used for?> there is a black wire, a red wire, and an orange and blue wire. the orange and blue wire is hot with key on, and i cant seem to get any voltage from the red one. any help would be great!

On the '03 wiring diagram there are 3 wires, black (ground), orange/light blue (high speed V+), and red/orange (low speed V+)--it sounds as though the your red only wire may be the low speed power.

Low speed is accomplished by powering the fan through a good sized series dropping resistor that is mounted on the fan housing (it clips in on the top, left of center, of the fan frame), and considered to be part of the fan assembly by Ford--I.e not shown as a separate component on the wiring diagram.

The low speed power has it's own 30A fuse, in an auxiliary fuse box on the passenger side fender well.

Your aftermarket fan, unless it consumes a LOT of power (more than 30A) should run fine connected to ground and the orange/light blue wire.

ok, i was kinda thinking the same thing u just said with the high and low speed. the fan is from AM, the mishimoto 14in. and it says it should only be taking like 5.5 amps.

but id like to be able to just hook it up and not have to worry about switchin it on and off while im driving. But if i hook it straight up it will run constantly. any idea if there is a way around that?

It should not run constantly, the fan is controlled by the PCM, through the low and high speed fan relays in the CCRM (Constant Control Relay Module), if it runs all the time then there is somthing wrong in the CCRM (perhaps stuck contacts in the high speed relay), or the ECT sensor, or the PCM...

Sorry to bring this post up from the dead. But someone put a new fan from a v6 in my 98 cobra it cools it just fine but there are only 2 wires from it. And it's running off a toggle switch. Can I just hook the red and the orange up to the single power wire and it will work for low and high or will it not work like that thanks. Cause I really hate the toggle switch.
