Default Am I retarded? E-brake problem...

I'll try to keep it short... Anyway, previous owner of my '96 appearently had no idea how to work on cars. New brake pads on WASTED rotors, all four corners. I went and replaced the fronts ASAP and finally got around to doing the rears today. The driver side went smooth and all was well until I moved on to the passenger side rear. Pulled the caliper off and went to screw the piston in when I noticed the dustboot/seal/rubber was twisted and torn. Judging on past experiences with damaged rubber in my Crown Vic I went and got a replacement from the local parts store. Installed and bled, thought all was great- until I tried to reinstall the e-brake cable. Nothing I did helped. Nowhere to perch leverage to pry, no slack to be found in the cable... What do I do??

Are you trying to mount the cable with the caliper all bolted down and such?

Take the caliper off the bracket and push the piston back in, then mount the cable..

I think you need to have the caliper on or else that's just going to make getting the caliper lined up really hard. It's a bitch.

What I did was to straddle the hub sitting on the ground and facing the front of the car. Grab the cable end with a pair of vicegrips and pull it into the bracket. Took like 4 tries.

I have yet to find out or hear an answer for adjusting e brake tension. My ebrake is so loose and only engages with one wheel. I can't figure out how to tighten the other side's line..

That makes no sense... So your saying whenever you do a rear brake job you remove the e-brake cable before you take the caliper off the bracket? Didnt think so. Technically, whenever you service the parking brake cables you are to release the tension from the handle.

  1. CAUTION: If any component in the parking brake system requires service or if the rear axle housing (4010) is removed, the cable tension must be released as follows:
  2. Place parking brake control (2780) in released position.
  3. Remove console top panel (044D90). Refer to Section 01-12.
  4. With an assistant inside vehicle, raise vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Section 00-02.
  5. Have another assistant pull parking brake cable and equalizer (2A603) rearward approximately 26-63 mm (1-2 1/2 inches) to rotate self-adjuster reel backward.
  6. CAUTION: Do not remove the steel lockpin until the parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) are connected to the parking brake cable and equalizer. Pin removal releases the tension in the ratchet wheel causing the spring to unwind and release tension. If the pin is removed without the parking brake rear cable and conduit attached, the entire assembly must be removed to reset spring tension.
Insert a steel lockpin through holes in lever and parking brake control assembly. This locks ratchet wheel in the cable-released position
