You can leave the bell housing and starter on, and pull the TOB from the hole where the tranny mounts to the bell housing. It's a lil tricky some times but it can be done. If you're not replacing the clutch or flywheel theirs no need for the bell housing to come off.

I am having a similar sound or chatter so to speak. Curious if replacing the bearing corrected noise. Everyone I have talked to suggested it was the throw out bearing.

If it makes ANY type of noise when you push the clutch it, even if you just start to barely push it down, then it's most likely the throw out bearing. Might as well replace it. Mine fell out in pieces. lol

I just had mine replaced and got it back today. It shifts silky smooth now and feels like a whole new car. Mine was making the same noises and all. It looks as though it shouldn't be to bad to do, but I just didn't have the time. Definitely get it done.

It's not too bad. You just have to do a lot of other things to get to it. If you're doing it for the first time, taking a part and putting back together, set aside at least 5 or maybe even 6 hours. If you've done it even twice you can probably cut it down to 3 hours. It took my dad and I about 8 hours total. That's including a trip the to the auto store to rent the pilot bearing puller and we couldn't get the tranny to line back up when we put it back on. If we had to do it again, we could definitely do it in 4 hours if not 3 1/2. The biggest pain was getting the starter off. If you have the right tools, it will save you a good 25 minutes or more with that part alone. When I did it, I replaced the pressure plate, disc, pilot bearing and throw out bearing. Everything else was still good. Thankfully I didn't need the fly wheel turned down and the clutch fork wasn't worn or cracked. Afterwards, even though I had replaced everything with OEM parts, the difference in clutch bite and just all around was like night and day. Well worth the time. Even though I had no choice anyway. lol

im pretty sure the throw out bearing goes if you always tend to rest your foot on your clutch. if you do this allot, out of habit your throw out bearing will go.

If you dont mind me asking, what did the throw out bearing replacement cost? My buddys 2004 GT needs to be replaced,(clutch too), and was quoted $900. Seems high to me.
