Question Time for torque converter...clueless.

Okay, so I am in the market for a stall or torque converter. I am looking in the 3200-3400 range. My problem is understanding exactly what size I need and also what are some of the better brands? Also, the only place I can find any type of selection is summit. Any place else online I can look? I am debating on just going to my local speed shop, since I know they can def help me get the right one. Also, its an auto.

I would hope its an auto since you can only put a torque converter in an auto.

Generally its best to go around 700 rpms below your peak torque. 3200 would be a good converter for the street and should definately get the car moving out of the hole a lot faster.

I would look at dirtydog converters or circle d

Lol'n at myself. I threw that in there because it seems everytime I ask for performance advice, that question either comes up or people assume its a 5 spd. Didn't even think about that small fact you pointed out.

How about PI converters? They seem to be quality built. I was trolling thru some other sites where some folks loved them, but naturally they were a few years old, so no rez'n them.

I was going to recomend you to them as well hearing that PI is good. I know of a guy that builds torque converters for a bunch of drag cars, such as 7 second dragster, 9 second door cars, etc. I can get you his number if you want. But some of those other companies named are just as good.

tci and suncoast is what us rednecks used on our trucks, im not sure if they do good work for stangs...ill look into it.

TCI has TONS of products for the stang. I personally used TCI before, a 3200 stall. One thing i can say....You might want to look into a transmission cooler, using a higher stall converter is great for launching, but it is VERY inefficient down low in the rpms, which cause excessive heat in normal driving conditions. I know firsthand...i literally cooked my tranny because of this lol. BUT, that was in my ranger, not in a mustang, so maybe the mustang has a more efficient setup. Hope this helped!

I would say go with something like a TCI StreetFighter (3000 stall) for one that will be driven on the street more than at the track. If you plan on just running at the track, then The Super StreetFighter (3500 stall) would be ideal. On a 450/420 rwhp/rwtq S197 with ET Streets, I personally saw a guy go from 11.9x all the way down to 11.48 with a 3500 stall converter.

This is mostly a track car, building it that way anyway. I just use it to take a cruise on sunday, that is about the most street action it sees.
