Default Engine Swap: 1985 GT HO engine into a 98 GT frame.

I was just wondering how easy it might be to do an engine swap. My mom's 98 mustang GT recently had the engine blow up on some guy we sold it to. now he is wanting to sell it back to me for 500 dollars. I recently came across too an old 85 GT HO version convertable that has been sitting for a couple years. I was already planning on overhauling the engine and trying to restore the body and interior of the 85, but the thought occured to put the the older engine into the 98 frame. the 85's engine I believe only has 130k on it.

Im just interested to know if anybody else has done this type of engine swap and what they had to do to make it all fit and bolt up.

any insight would be wonderful.

thanks alot, like the site.

it can be done but what it would cost you for the swap you could find another 96-98 4.6 and drop it right in with out swapping out anything.

well the reason I wanted to do the 5.0L was that it was right there reasily available for free. how much after extra parts do you think it would cost to put the 5.0L in there? and how much do used 4.6L GT engines go for?

ive found good used non P.I. 4.6 engines from 250.00-500.00 with a little looking. im not for sure what all you would have to have to do the swap but im willing to say a K-member from a 94-95 gt or aftermarket, wiring harness, computer, id say the fuel system would need some work, and id dont think the trans from the 98 would bolt up to a 5.0.

The mod and 302 bellhousings are different, but your also looking at a computer (unless you carb it), and a harness. I dont think theres much difference in the k member if any, I would have to look at my buddies 95 and compare it to my 98. exhaust would have to be done to obviously.

OP your going to spend more on making the 5.0 fit in the 98 than you would just finding a used 4.6. And you definitely have to get a cross member from a 94/95 to put a push rod motor in a 98

ok thanks for all the opinions, I guess i will just try to get ahold of a 4.6L engine then.

Any ideas on the 85 though? the interior of this car is not worth any restoration, but the engine is still intact and it doesnt look all that bad for having been sitting for 4+ years

If I were to clean the engine up what would I be able to sell it for

the main thing that you will look at when deciding wether or not to part out a car is #1 does the car still have a good title, if yes than #2 is the body damaged or rusted thru in any spots?? including floors and trunks. used 5.0 engines can go for 100.00-500.00

new carpet is about 100.00-150.00, good leather seats from a 94-04 can be found for 100.00- 2000.00. check out www.50resto.com.
