Help with choosing gears and what you think my problem is, lol.
A little background to this money pit of a car:
- Last Summer, the transmission blew up. Out of nowhere. Didn't miss a shift (or for awhile before either), wasn't racing it, nothing. Boo.
- Get a new transmission this Spring. Go ahead and drive it around, break it in a bit, everything is fine. Week and a half ago, at Milan, I twist the input shaft. Okay, fine.
- Get the car back a few days later, drive it around some more, and I decide to go up to Milan again yesterday. Very first pass of the day at Milan (We got there early ) I launch and hear this HORRIBLE noise...I thought my tire exploded and my wheel was dragging along the ground. That's the only thing I could think would make that noise. So...rear end blown up?
Get it towed off the track and trailer the car home...haven't started taking it apart yet as my dad is out of town and I'd rather not eff anything else up (). The sound *mainly* comes from the right side of the rear end but if you sit outside the car you can hear a whine from where the gears are. Also...
Yay! I'm thinking that has to be the problem, right? Lol. The guys at the line who helped pull me off said that they kicked a few pieces of metal off the line so I have to assume so. Weirdly enough (I think it's weird anyways...maybe not.) I didn't leak anything they said.
So...that said, what do you guys think I broke NOW? (I'll put the video at the end for anyone interested. You can hear the sound at about 9-10 seconds in.)
That's question 1. Question two is this: right now I have (had, lol) 3.73 gears in the car, as that's what we put in when we built it (take-off rear from another car had the gears in it). I've always heard that 4.10s are the way to go in 01 Cobras...is it really worth it? My gas mileage sucks as it is (Not that I'm complaining. It's well worth the fun the car gives!) and we drive it to/from the track on the highway. What do you guys think? If I have to replace the rear anyways...should I go with 4.10s? What do you think I'd pick up at the track?
Thanks for making it to the end and thanks in advance for any replies!
