Default Opinions on gears

I have a 2001 Automatic GT, completely stock. I want to change gears in it though as one of my first mods. I am having trouble deciding weather to go with 3:73, 3:90, or 4:10. It is shifting into 3rd gear about 1200 feet down the 1/4. I need to even it out. what are your thoughts and how did your times improve with your gear changes.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Forget about 3.90's...They (Motive) have a reputation of whining. If you are planning to hit up the track often then get the 4.10's.

but if you plan on running it on the highway, then 4.10 is way to high, go with Ford Racing 3.73:1, because, richmond, motive, and summit, have a bad reputation for whining, and chipping, and leaving metal shavings all in you differintial, which is not a good thing, lol

since when is 4.10 too high for the highway? i went on a 250 mile trip to mustang week last month with my 4.10's and at 70 i was at 2500..didnt bother me a bit.

IMO you cant beat 4.10's kinda the perfect all around gear

+1 on the 4.10s, you won't regret it.

We have had a few threads that talked about RPMs and each one of them show that there isn't a big difference in RPM and only translate to ~2mpg lost with 4.10s.

With an auto, I would def. go with at LEAST 4.10s. A few people here have 4.30s and love them, but they are not their DD. Don't go with 3.73.

I'll say the opposite - 4.10s are too much.

A friend has a GT with stage 2 cams, and a bunch of other mods... when he runs his 150 shot on the track he overshoots his gearing and ends up in 5th before the end of the 1/4 mile... Forgot to mention the car has 4.10s.

bharsen had 4.10s in his auto-equipped GT. It was turning 2800 RPM on the highway at 70. That's just way too much, the car was hell to be in because it was so loud. He had full bolt-ons, but stock intake manifold... shorty headers, no cats, UDPs, tune, etc etc. On a race, my 100% stock GT with a 75 shot was faster... it got ugly on highway rolls because he'd hit overdrive and I'd barely be going into 3rd.

4.10s are a bad idea! They're not the "every mustang gear" that many people love to believe.

For the auto, get 3.73's.
