Default Spark Plug Gap Opinions

i went to the local Oreilly's and got me a new set of Motorsport Platinum's to change out this last weekend and they recommended to gap at .54 thousand's. I immediatley thought to myself "man thats a huge gap!" So I called a budy of mine up thats used to work at ford and he builds alot of the local guy's mustangs around town (not mine though, I just ask advice here and there) and he said no no no! gap it at 44 not 54. so I gapped em at 44 and it ran superb! I just wanted to know a few peoples opinion

My gap, as per the Catalyst Control sticker found under the hood, as well as the opinion of FoMoCo is .52-.56 and it's never steered me wrong.

Your friend may set them that close, however the factory spec is 0.052" to 0.056" as posted above. Wider gaps such as this are common with high energy DIS and COP ignition systems using precious metal plugs.

On very high compression and f/i engines it is common to use plain ol' tungsten electrode plugs, gapped to 0.035" or so, to get a fat spark less prone to "blowout"--and needing to be replaced every 18k to 25k miles.

However on a n/a, OEM compression engine, platinum plugs at 0.054" will work fine for 75k+ miles.

A lot of people still gap .035 that run blowers - Personally I agree with your friend - I've been gapping mine at .044 - running 8 pounds of boost through my engine and never have any problems - I'm using a plasma booster as well so that should have an affect on it.

But I agree with whats been posted - use the what the factory says for a factory motor - once you start getting in to custom builds, ported heads, blowers etc.... then you might wanna change stuff up .... but until then trust the factory specs
