Default Gears (and ratios)

Okay, so the consensus from my last post was that I should have gears changed for my first mod (I believe it said 3.73)...explain this! What do I have from the dealership? What are the different ratios and how are they going to make a difference??? What should I expect?

What do i have from the dealer ship?

I think they are something like 2.73

What are the different ratios?

There are many different ratios.

Hos are they going to make a difference?

When you are talking about gears the number that most people say,for example 3.73 is only the first part of the equaation, there is an assumed 1 after those numbers, which means that the gear ratio is 3.73 TO 1. This means that your tires are going around 3.73 times for every one time the drive shaft turns. The higher the ration the more difference you would notice, but you dont want to overkill.

What should i expect?

You should expect what feels like a boost in horsepower, however since you are just turning the tires more there is really no actual power gain, but it will fell that way. It will also definately help your acceleration.

I'm not 100% sure about all of that stuff so if its wrong sorry but i hope that i helped you out.

Thanks for the reply...sounds like that would affect the spedo, right? Any clue what kind of difference in acceleration I would feel (are we talking a few hundredths or tenths 0 -60?)

Juiceman you were right on the money with your explanation. And, yes you will need to adjust your speedo and if you put the 73's in I swear it will feel like you just put on a supercharger. You wont believe the difference!!!!!

I thought it was 3.73 turns of the driveshaft for every once of the tires? Am I dislexic (sp?)?

EDIT:

3.73:1 is 3.73 rotations of the drive shaft to 1 rotation of the tire. if it was the other way around you would be doing 800 mpg at a rpm of 2200. hehehe

I've got a 2001 GT and the stock gears are 3:27's. I'm about to swap in 3:73's also.

To put it simply, you will pull a few carlengths on a stock mustang. 373s are a good choice. If you are going to go further with your mods, I would reccomend upgrading axles at the same time. Some folks have had a lot of luck with stock axles, but its a timebomb that will cost you more in the long run than beefing things up while you are installing gears.
