Default Spark Plug INFo!

so i put in new motorcraft spark plugs the other day and gapped them to .054. Ive been reading that alot of people suggest doing them between.043-.047. They say it will make it run better and get a lil kick to it. Is this true? What are the advantages of gapping them smaller?
