Default tranny rebuild question

suposedly my tranny was freshly rebuilt no miles, but it has no fluid in it....so that makes me wonder if thats normal not to have fluid in a tranny that wasnt installed in a car, and 2 how long can it not have fluid in it before it does damage? and i dont mean installed in the car without fluid i just mean sitting without fluid.

I dont think that it will hurt to not have fluid in it like it would for an engine. Like there really isnt any sealing that the fluid does. It just lubricates...right???

It depends on the temperature variations and relative humidity of the place it's being stored, what sort of assembly lubricant was used, and of course how long it's going to be stored.

In a non-climate controlled out-building here in Florida (a place I would NOT store it) I would say 6 months tops without putting some fluid in and turning it over for a bit now and then.

In an average attached garage (where I probably would store it) a year without fluid or turning over would probably be OK--but I would add fluid and turn it over once in a while anyway...

What are the consequences of not doing this??? Just out of curiosity...

people also forgot to mention whether this was standard practice after a tranny rebuild not to fill with fliud if it wasnt going right back into a car.

tranny is ok as long as its not affected by weather...moisture that will cause components to rust. We used to keep our trannys stored without oil for a year or two and they were just fine.
