Unhappy Transmission drop...problems

ok so ive got a 2001 mustang Gt. The throw out bearing recently started making some noise so I thought id go ahead and replace it along with the clutch and pilot bearing. So i started takin it out this morning...everything was going smoothley enough until I got to the top two bolts on the transmission. and then the starter...ive heard there are three bolts holding it on. I can get two...one at the bottom and one pretty much on the other side just as low that I could undo coming from the front of the engine. I cant find the other one to save my life...any help would be great. Like a diagram even.lol. also, does the exhaust need to be removed to help this process?

well the top two bolts on top of the transmission are difficult. ive never done a stang transmission drop but on my jeep (ive had that trans out 3 times) i had to jack up the oil pan for support and then lower the transmission jack to allow my 6 foot extension to reach up on top of the bellhousing

For the top starter bolt, you are going to need to use enough extension to take your ratchet in front of the motor in order to get the angle to get to it. It is a SOB. As for the top tranny bolts, assuming you have the exhaust and shifter off, jack up the front of the motor with a floor jack to tilt the engine back. You should be able to get enough of an angle on it to make getting those top bolts a bit easier.

ok so ive had people tell me that they left off the very top bolt on the transmission and the very top bolt on the starter...is that safe. Cause if it is id rather not deal with these again the next time I drop the tranny.

i wouldnt they put those bolt is there for a reason so put them all back in . the starter bolt really is not that bad if you have enough extention to go through the k member. you need to take out the exhaust andthe shifter to get the top two bolts outta the bell housing pull the cross member out of the tail shaft and let the tail fall down a few inches and you will have enough room with a long extention to get to them.

i would honestly separate the trans case from the bell housing and take the trans out then pull the bell housing after that
