For a stock 96-04 GT you need to run only 87 octance. Using any higher octane gasoline will add nothing for performance.

If you advance your timing, upgrade your computer chip, install a tune via Dyno or handheld tuner you will need to look into using 91/93 octance (whatever is available in your area).

Please contribute any information you have, such as why not using higher octane in your application when it's not needed, what it can harm and what it's only needed for.

Higher octane won't hurt your motor or cause any weird buildup. It will not help you any if you don't need it though. Me I run 93 in my Camaro due to the compression being 10.25:1, but in my 94 GT I run 87.

It may sound strange, but my 04 GT seems to "guzzle" higher octane, so I just run 87.

As per what my signature was for like a month or two...

Only use Premium if you have;
1. advanced timing
2. increased compression ratio (the general cut off from regular to premium is around 9.8-10:1 depending on the car and driving conditions)
3. forced induction of any sort ie nitrous, SC, Turbo

I'm going to add a fourth option here though.
4. If you feel your car pinging or knocking, try bumping up to 91 octane, if it goes away then you DO in fact NEED to use premium gas.

PI stands for polished/ported intake...basically it's sandblasting your head for [sm=bling.gif] and porting the intake and exhaust valves to make em bigger allowing more air to be exchanged through your engine...porting if you have the tools you can DIY but leave the sandblasting to the pros
