Default Was wondering about coolant leak

My friend is describing a problem to me right now, he is on the side of the road and can't drive his car, and can't really afford a tow.

"My mustang cracked a hose or something. There is coolant everywhere and white smoke coming from my exhaust. (might be his imagination, because it's about 20 degrees here, there is always smoke coming out) it's a small black piece right behind the engine that the hose broke off of. The hose goes to the firewall. There is coolant all over my engine, some hose from the firewall like broke off some part of the engine."

Does this sound like the hose returning from the heater core?

Yes. Did it overheat?

He hasn't said if it overheated or not... but he said that the coolant smell was coming from where the hose broke off (makes sense) what I am thinking is that maybe his radiator cap wasnt on tight enough allowing the coolant to boil, then get so hot that it melted the plastic fastener and break off the engine?

Without seeing it I wouldn't even venture to guess.
