Default Cold/Hot

My orignal post was in the S197 section. My bad. My 97' GT when I first start it, the temp gauge stays cold for about 5 minutes, then shoots up to hot for about 3 minutes then goes to normal. Everyone that has commented, states that I should change the thermostat. Others suggested a "flush", while others suggested that it may be the water pump. These are all things that I have considered. Anyone out there have a similar problem, before I start working on all of them?

went with the easiest thing to start. changed the thermostat. seems to be working fine.
Over the summer, it was overheating with the A/C on. We'll see soon enough.
Thanks everyone, for your input.

Well people, bad news for me. Dang car overheated on the way to work. Cold air out of the heater, shut it off. Temp gauge went all the way to hot, then to normal. Guess I'll take the next step.
