well it doesn't open but the car thinks it does. when i drive i hear the ding and my dome light comes on. sometimes it goes off when i hit a bump and sometimes it stays on so i have to take the dome light out. it does it intermittenly so i was guessing it's the sensor? could anyone lead me in the right direction to get this fixed? thanks.

It is most likely that one or both if the door ajar switches is bad, or that the wiring to one or both is intermittently shorting to ground (these switches switch the wire to ground to signal the GEM that the door is open).

The switches are part of the latching mechanism, here is a pdf showing the driver's side location...
