Default PCM memory problem

I have a 2000 GT 4.6 with Automatic trans. When it wouldn't pass inspection, the shop told me that the computer was losing its memory everytime the key is turned off. They said that either the continuous 12v wire to the computer is bad or the internal memory of the pcm is bad. I have confirmed that the computer has cont. 12v but want to know if anyone else has had this problem before I purchase another pcm. Also, the fuel economy around town is very bad. I assume that if the memory is bad that the computer has to re-learn every time the car is restarted. Also, does anyone have a recommendation where to buy another computer other that Ford?

Did you check the 5A fuse in position 21, under the dash?

Thanks for the info. Do you know how much it should cost?

If you haven't already dome so, I would also check for +12V continuous at pin 55 of the PCM, just to be sure it's not a wiring issue, before springing for a new box...
