Default 88 GTA 5.7 - Can I take'em?

My buddy just bought an 88 GTA 5.7L: 82k miles, Eldabrock shorty headers, 3" Y-pipe to 3" single all the way to tailpipe w/no cat and Flowmaster muffler, probably a stage two shift kit in the 700R4. As for hop ups, that's all we know of.

My 03 GT: 5 speed, Pypes O/R X, Brola Stingers, BBK C/A/I, just ordered blacked out Cobra 10.5" wheels paired with M/T 315 Drag radials. Also will be ordering a set of Ford Racing 3.73 rear end gears (to be installed before we ever line up). My shifting abilities are pretty quick, but I will be searching/posting threads on correct speed shifting techniques. (Feel free to post links to any threads pertaining to this) Been studying videos on YouTube.

As for horsepower adders, this is all I have. (For now)

I know the 700R4 is pretty quick in 1st and 2nd gears, but falls on it face from there out. As long as I don't miss third (my hardest gear), what you think?

Can I take him?

230hp/330tq "stock" w/ a 2.77 gear ratio, unless he's got the G92 package.

if you get 3.73's its no contest, and even without, it shouldnt be too hard to get him.

after you lay the spank down, lemme know if he wants to sell it i'll buy it. lol jk. i really do love me some 3rd gen chevy's though, better lookin than that new crap they got out now.

You shouldn't miss 3rd with your Hurst STS.

You'll smoke him by 3 cars or more with the 3.73s

My mom has an 89 Iroc-Z 5.7L. Stock 2.77 posi rear end, 2.5" Y with flowmaster exhaust. My Mustang will eat it alive. They are demons off the line provided you can get traction, but fall flat VERY quickly after that. It will light the 245/45/16 tires up through first and second. I will say that if it has 4.10's in the rear, it's gonna be a whole lot closer.

I would love to have my 89 GTA back. But it was taking more money to keep it running right than I could put into it. But those things way a lot more than your Mustang. Like somebody mentioned, I think it will come down to what gears he has, and each of your driving ability.
But then, there are times I would like to have my 90 Mustang GT again... there are things about it that I liked better than my current 04 GT.

I had 4.10's in my '89 305 TPI (LB9) G92 5-speed TA. The LB9 that year with the G92 option (only with 5-speed) had dual cats and were rated at 230HP/300tq. I ran 14.1's in the quarter with that car, all stock but the gears. It was hard to drive because of the engines power band. I had to get real good at shifting.

If that L-98 is running good, watch out. All the 350 in that generation F-body are automatics, which are much easier to drive in the quarter mile.

You should win with the 3.73's, but I wouldn't expect 3 car lengths. The headers will help that '88 quite a bit, until the TPI intake runs out of breath. That was the real weak spot with those motors. My LB9 was all done by 4700 rpm, that's what made it hard to drive.

I still haven't got my GT to the track, but I fully expect to run at least 13.7's with it when I do.

I already have the "driver mod", I've been drag racing at my local track for 20 years, so don't start with that.

Not so sure about the weight of the GTA being more. According to consumer guide, it weighs 3100lbs and the GT weighs 3077lbs. And yeah, I had hell getting all of the wiring bugs out of that IROC-Z. The flat out biggest killer on that 5.7L is the 2.77 gears. I am sure with a good stall converter and minor bolt ons the Iroc could be a beast. So much freaking torque.

Yep, 2.77's did and still do kill that car. That gear for that car is crazy, but they really had little choice in the matter back then.

I don't think our GT's are geared right either.

I don't either. I can crank out a little over 100MPH in 3rd with my 3.27's. Only problem with putting 4.10's on the Iroc is how much freaking torque it makes already, first and second would be damn near worthless without major suspension mods and drag radials.
