Default Steering wheel is feeling a little rubbery...

What causes "rubbery" feeling steering? This is a very recent issue... the roads are fine, it's most apparent at slower speeds, I turn the wheel, and there is a very distinct rubber feel...

It may be a permanent compression the steering rack mounting bushings, usually they creak too but not always--it was one of the first things I fixed on my '03.

The steering shaft also has a bit of play in it and that may be causing it. I just swapped the stock piece for the MM solid steering shaft and am loving the difference. The steering wheel no longer has any play in it and is extremely responsive.
