1999-2004 Mustangs do not have a coolant drain on the block. You either have to buy a backflush kit from walmart or an auto store. Or you simply have to drain, refill, run, drain, refill, run, etc until everything in the block has been cycled through. I took the time to do it this way and although it takes forever its all idle time so while you are running it or draining it you can go on about doing other things. I took a nice day last Spring to do lawn work/outside work all day while I kept the flush process going.

Yes thats fine I just ran a hose straight to my overflow tank....I never added coolant until my final two refill and flushes. If you just add it on top of the last refill you end up with very little coolant in terms of mixture. I recommend just leaving the radiator drain plug open and running water through it for about a minute or so on the first drain. Do not forget to bleed your coolant system of air pockets after this.

Thats a good question actually, i've never had the heads off of my car. But it doesnt make sense to me to design heads with such a potential for disaster like that. I've never heard of anybody here saying that was a particular issue when removing heads. Theres plenty of guys around here that can answer this for you confidently but i'm just not positive.

How do you bleed the air pockets out of the coolant system?

Once you're done flushing fill her up, leave the overflow tank cap OFF and start the engine. Let it idle until the radiator fan clicks over. This usually takes about 30 minutes if the engine was cold to start with. The air bubbles will work themselves out as it idles. Once the fan clicks over your system is bled. Put the cap back on and test drive.
