Default HELP Diagnose Engine Knock...

I’ve got a nasty tick/knock in the motor. It sounds like a rod bearing. The ECM shows a code that cylinders 4 and 7 are misfiring.

The car has little power under acceleration and sputters very badly. Prior to this all going down, no codes were thrown, but the car would sputter and cut out when getting heavy on the throttle.

Will a bad rod bearing cause strong unburned fuel fumes? The exhaust fumes are terrible.

That doesn't sound good. Can you narrow it to a specific cyl? Try using a diagnostic stethoscope like this:

See if you can narrow it down to a specific cyl. Last time I heard that, it wasn't pretty. How is the oil pressure? Do you find great differences in hot/cold operation or when at idle vs. running? If it drops to under 20 lbs at idle, could be a bearing.

Doesn't sound like a rod bearing to me. Check your spark plugs and make sure they aren't backing out. That has be known to cause ticking noise and maybe be why they aren't firing. Check the 4 and 7 cylinders first obviously.

Oil pressure is fine. No difference between hot and cold operation, or at startup vs running.

Try changing the plugs on the cylinders that are misfiring and go from there, I don't beleive if u have a bad rod bearing that it would cause a misifre. A friend of mine had a same issue with a 2002 GT he bought used, it turned out someone previously stripped a spark plug hole and and used a cheap imitation heli-coil or something and the sparkplug was sitting lower than factory and the piston hit it which obviously gave it a misfire and a strange tap noise.

Being not oil pressure problems, start with the basics as stated above. Too many people forget the basics.
