Default New Igition Key - YIKES!

Got a 2001 Cobra with one key. Gotta get two more spares (hey, can't be too safe, huh?). I read a couple of threads, but worth doing another check.</P>

I know it is a 'chipped' key. Local dealer quotes $25 for the key and $65 for programming. Haven't checked locksmiths yet, but is there a procedure we can do the chip coding from home (turn ign swith five times, say three 'Hail Marys", and genuflect?)? OR - are we tethered to the dealer for the coding?</P>

really; 2kpony has a stick up the ***. Maybe I dont have a 4.6 but I can sure as hell help out wherever I can, thats the point of being a mustang forum, to give help when you can, and shut it when you are out of YOUR league. If you own a 4.6 and havequestions about any part, post them in the 4.6 FORUM,but for your enjoyment 2kpony, I'll create a Locksmith, Programming, and other stuff that you dont think is important Forum. </P>

Back to the topic, there is a way you can do it at home, but you need the right equiptment, and good luck getting the dealer to tell you how!! This is one of those suck you in type deals at the dealership, but call a locksmith to see what they say. The dealers do it all the time as well, so your last and safest bet would be them.</P><edited><editID>95Stealth302</editID><editDate>37950.0255324074</editDate></edited>

I had my locks replaced and got new keys cuz these asses in Hawaii like to take screwdrivers to your door locks. I'd take it to a locksmith or do a search on the web. I reprogramed mine myself. Although I can't remember exactly what I did. I know i had to put the key in and turn it on and off a few times then leave it on the onposistion for like 15 minutes. You'll see the theft light flash or it stays on... Then you have to turn it off then back on again whenever it goes out. Basically you have to do this 3 times so it will take you 45 minutes for each key. Just make sure you're there to watch it. If you let it sit too long in between the key switching you'll mess it all up.

Yeah the owners manual should have it in there. I just rememebered that I reprogramed a new key code into the computer and NOT keys to the computer. So what I said is probably useless unless you get a whole new key set. Sorry for the mess up.</P>
