Default help figuring out the 4.6L motor

hey guys, im new to the v8s. i sold me v6 about a week ago and picked up my gt yesterday. im currently going to school to be a machinery technician in the uscg, we are studing internal combustion motors this week and me and my buddie are now having an argument over the sohc layout. so i have a few quesitons

1. since it is a soch does it have pushrods or cam followers?
2. if it has cam followers how is is layed out to work both heads?

i was looking for schematics on the motor but i cant find any.

sorry for the stupid questions guys.

No question is a stupid question!! SOHC is kind of misleading to someone who don't know or understand a lot about engines (not motors, motors are electric powered),,it is actually a DUAL over head cam engine! Meaning TWO cam shafts,,one per head,,TWO seperate timming chains, both running off the crankshaft gear.

Now,,4valve engines are DOUBLE/QUAD overhead cam engines(DOHC),,Meaning FOUR cams,,TWO per head, four seperate chains, two off the crankshaft and one each between the cams.

My own opinion,, FORD should have called the SOHC engine what it is, a DOHC(1)= Dual Over Head Cam (1cam per head) AND DOHC(2)= Double Over Head Cam (2cams per head)!!!!! Just My Own Opinion=JMOO!!

I dunno I disagree. SOHC explains the head itself, not the amount of cams in the entire engine. I mean it has "over head cam" in the name, it isn't plural. SOHC and DOHC both accurately describe how he head is set up, leaving no confusion, as to having DOHC(1) and DOHC(2) which actually is much more confusing (since it is describing ONE head, and not the entire motor)

It's two separate motors to a degree
Almost like Siamese twins joined at the hip (crank)

^+1,

The engine has two camshafts, however it is a SOHC engine as each head has a just a single cam. Ford would have confused the entire automotive engineering community by calling it a DOHC engine.

I have heard multi-bank overhead cam engines referred to as "dual cam" and "quad cam" by way of quick identification, however that is a separate issue from SOHC and DOHC design designations.
