Default Noise from steering wheel

alright guys, When i turn my steering wheel i get a noise from the wheel that sounds like a spring, it sounds like the clock spring is rubbing on something or has broken. Im not really sure whats going on. i took a video of it so you can hear kinda what im talking about.

there is another problem that is bothering me with the steering wheel as well though. Im not sure if there are any type of bushings in the wheel where it attaches to the column, but it moves more than it should in an up and down motion, that I also show in the video im posting here, its right at the end.

If it is the clock spring, hopefully it doesnt cause the airbag to go off for no reason Thanks for the help

there is for sure something wrong in the column. you should remove the wheel and inspect the clock spring, also seems that the play up and down is in the tilt mechanisim. needs to be pulled apart and inspected. good luck.

I'm going to say it is somewhere in your steering column that is your problem. The clock spring isn't really a spring it is more like a flat ribbon that caries the signals for the Cruise,Horn and air bag. Imagine a Recoil spring like on a lawn mower

Ha lights... disconnected the bulb But i checked for the other day cuz the car was idling bad and nothing out of the ordinary other than rear O2's. And im not sure on the cruise and horn, havnt had a need to use em recently.. ill try tonight.

And back to the comment about what the clock spring is. Ive had a few apart and know what it looks like but Im just not sure what could be making the noise.

Does anyone know exactly how the combination switch works? or how it is exactly driven off the steering column for the blinkers?

its a multi switch, it just basic switch, nothing special. your wheel was not put back together correctly/tightly the horn is rubbing against the head of the column. its possible that the retaining clip was not put on or came off. Take to local locksmith for a fix, mechanic my start throwing parts at it without proper diagnosis

i checked the horns and cruise and everything there works. And as far as I know the steering wheel has never been taken off since ive owned it, 9 years. But if and when i do tear into it when i have time to figure it out, ill check for that loose or missing clip you're talking about.

CobraFrenzy - let me know what he finds out, its annoying when i give a ride to someone and there is a horrid creaking/rubbing noise coming from a very important part of the car haha
