My 97 GT with 155000 miles starts ok in the morning. Whne I stop at the mailbox on the way to work it makes a howling noise and usually dies, Stats right back up and runs fine. Any ideas on wht could be wrong. No code.

This sounds (no pun intended) as though the idle air control valve has failed and is chattering rather than doing what it is supposed to--more about this here.
What you describe is exactly how mine went out, at first just honking but later stalling out when cold...
does this howling sound increase in noise when you rev the motor? I have a similar noise when the car is cold.
In my experience the IAC related "howling", "honking", "French horn" noise has been unrelated to engine speed, and discontinuous--often silenced by "blipping" the throttle.
I would suggest that you may have another issue, perhaps related to some engine driven auxiliary device. Failed/failing generator, power steering, water pump, or idle pulley bearings can create engine speed related whines/howls/etc...
