Default 4.6L 2v swap to 5.4L 2v

So I've done a lot of looking around and can't seem to find the answers I want/need.

I have the otion to get a headless 5.4 cheap (super cheap, good condition and under 40,000miles) I belive it was a 2002 5.4 f150 motor. My cars motor is torn down and I got thinking I would love to have a 5.4 but I just put tons of money in my 4.6 heads. I belive they will bolt on with little to no probs am I wrong? Also my 8 bolt flywheel will also bolt on no problem, correct?

Since I'm keeping my 4.6 heads does it matter if it is/was a 3v and could it be a 3v or 4v? What eles do I need to know about doing this? I plan on having to figure out intake because I'm pretty sure what I put on my 4.6 will have to be modified or get something completely different for a 5.4. Also I might get a different k meber. I had checked my ptv clearance and was good on my 4.6 will it be more or less on the 5.4?

your heads will bolt right to the 5.4. the 5.4 is almost a direct swap. you can use your 4.6 manifold but you have to get the adaptor plates. as for exhaust, shorty headers or your stock exhaust manifolds will work but long tubes will not. for the flywheel, idk? but everything else will fit like it was a 4.6. now go have fun with it

there are already several good writeups for 5.4 swaps. this thread will answer pretty much every question you have.

http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...-write-up.html

2v, 3v, and 4v heads from a 4.6 will bolt directly to a 5.4 and vice versa. the crank is 8 bolt so your flywheel will work. if the motor started out a 4v you will have extra timing chains and stuff that need to be removed. not sure about 3v exactly, but 2v is def no problem.

like said...you can use 200$ adapter plates to use a PI manifold, but for 600$ you can buy the HPS intake that adds 25-30hp (so technically your only spending 400$ for 30+ hp).

not sure about PTV...dont know what kinda pistons are in the 5.4.

k member isnt necessary the 5.4 has the same mounting points as the 4.6, but if you want to go with a tubular by all means, now is better than after the motor is in the car.

I find this kinda weird and had to ask.
If you put 4.6 PI heads on a 5.4 block why would you need the adapter plates?
The head are from a 4.6 liter prior and used stock intake why adapter plates just for switching block which pretty much is the same, Just stroked more?

had to ask.

Id like to do the swap also in future in my GT

because the 5.4 has a taller deck height...the bore is the same the stroke is much longer though to give it the extra displacement. this means the heads are spaced further apart than on the 4.6 motor.

Ok so to add to that question, if you use the adaptor plates, any intake / head combo currently on the 4.6L will work on the 5.4L short block then?

I actually had a 5.4L short block offered to me at work today, so I'm glad this thread was started. (So much for not modding it too much, huh? LOL)

I want to add that this is a NECESSARY swap. I put 8k into my motor and suspension. 10min into idleing, she died. The oil pump shattered and the block seized. Needless to say, I now have scrap metal.

I was able to find a 5.4 for less than I could get a 4.6 for.

AND I currently have a PI swap sitting in my garage now. :-)

If memory serves, the 2002 F150 5.4 was a 2V anyway. The PI top end will bolt to the 5.4 with the aforementioned adapter plates. The adapter plates are available at http://www.reichardracing.com/46to54adapter.php. Cost is $375. I've heard that with the plates, you can avoid changing the hood, but I don't know for certain. If you go with a 5.4 intake, your hood will not cover it for sure.

If you want to convert to a 3V or 4V, you'll need the ECU and wiring harness at a minimum.

Which ever way you go, you'll need the correct front cover, timing chains, etc. from the 5.4 for whichever heads you run.

for the 4v, you can use your 2v ecu and harness. but the ecu needs to be tuned and the harness will have to be slightly modfied
