Listen, dropping the pan and will not get all the fluid out. Those flush machines actually work, they completely replace all the old fluid with new fluid, converter and all. Ford actually recommends flushing the system if possible, drain and fill is "acceptable"

NOTE: Draining fluid from the transmission by removing only the fluid pan is acceptable for normal or severe duty fluid maintenance.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02.
  1. Use a suitable flush and fill machine to change the fluid.
  1. When connecting the flush and fill machine, connect the machine to the fluid cooler tube after the fluid cooler on the cooler return line. This will help remove any foreign material trapped in the fluid coolers.
Refill
  1. Use only clean automatic transmission fluid.
  1. Once the fluid exchange has been completed, disconnect the flush and fill machine. Reconnect any disconnected fluid cooler tubes.
  1. With the engine running and the transmission at normal operating temperature 66-77°C (150-170°F), check and adjust the transmission fluid level and check for any leaks. If fluid is needed, add fluid in increments of 0.24-liter (0.5-pint) until the correct level is achieved (fluid should be in the cross-hatched area of the fluid level indicator).

every 30k... so assume you had it done at 30, and do it now because your at 60+. Unless the trans fluid on the stick is in an acceptable state. (should be bright red and smell like straight trans oil. Orange/brown/black is bad, along with a deep dark red with a pungent odor

Change it, regardless of auto or manual if your car is just a weekend warrior like mine and not a DD, I just change my rear end and tranny every spring when I bring it out. Don't care if I'm wasting money its only a once a year deal, and the car gets maybe 3k miles a year, 2500 which are hard miles. I agree with Doug 100% on the flush, this way u have all fresh fluid.

I agree with the every 30k. Stay on top of it and your trans will last a really long time.

I have owned a lot of cars. I have always dropped the pans and changed the fluids & filters every 30k miles. I usually sell my cars with around 200k miles on them. I have never blown a trans.
