I should add that a dealer can "marry" an unmatched HEC and PCM pair using the IDS. They will want solid proof of ownership, and may have to contact Ford to obtain a new security ID...

did any of the original security systems use that method or something similar?

I ask because I was at radioshack one day buying a bag of assorted resistors and the guy (older guy) behind the desk asked me if I was buying those resistors to chip keys, and proceeded to explain to me apparently how you can "program" a key to a specific resistance and that is somehow used to tell if a key is legit or not.

I have never heard of such a system, then again even at my age I have yet to hear of everything. However I am reasonably certain that very few, if any, automotive or electronic engineers work at Radio Shack.

It would be a VERY weak security system, hardly worth the bother...

I had the same problem with my 03 GT, only one key when i bought it new. Like everyone said it is not that expensive as compared to other makes and model cars. I did find out there is a way you can program your own keys easy if you have at least 2 working keys (i know you only have one but for future). So I found 2 factory ford keys uncut on ebay cheap (about a 2 for 1 deal) and then brought them to a local ford dealer to have them programed since they need to use there computer to do it. it was about $60 at the dealer for the program. Now i have 3 working keys and 2 stay home in a safe place and if i loose 1 i will get another and program myself. I figure this to be a little insurance since if you have the time to shop around and get the correct keys at a great price the program at the dealer is about the same if you program 1 or 2 new keys. Hope this helps.

I think if you have 2 keys that already have the chip in them or something like that you can use your ignition someway to program your own key. But even then you still have to have a key with a chip in it that fits your ignition...so it's not gonna be that much cheaper.

How to program additional keys is in the owner's manuals--you can download them here...

Yup, Thanks cliffyk for reminding me where the instructions for the spare key was. Found it on page 58 of the 2003 owners manual. I know he will have to spend the money now regardless if he only has one key but if he spends just a little more and get the 2 keys he will avoid a situation like this in the future. The keys are going for around $7-$15 on ebay not sure what the dealer charges for the blank. Some on ebay are aftermarket keys some are factory ford keys.

That's a good question. I'd worry about getting a crap key on ebay. Especially one from China. I wonder how you can identify quality with those on ebay. I guess just user reviews.
