Default Wear and tear

Well this is my first post and I am doing some research on a 1999 GT with 149xxx miles and a 2000 with 146xxx miles both under a 4k asking price. My question is, how do these cars hold up in their later miles? are these good prices? Also are the 5.0's a better buy (not fox body the SN95)?

I used to have an LS1 Trans AM but I had to sell it and now I'm looking to get back into a muscle car...A Trans AM is just way too far out of my budget right now. thanks for any help guys!

Out of those two, I would go for the 2000, but I would really keep an eye out for a 2001+ with the PI motor. I have a 96 GT, and it just feels like it lacks. If you get one with a PI engine, it'll save you a lot of time and some money later on.

To answer your question though, the motors will hold up for a long time. They're used in the police interceptors and a lot of cabs, and those will run into the 300,000's. That's with pretty perfect maintenance though.

I have a 99 gt 5 speed with 164 thousand miles on it and runs fine.A older lady had it since 02 and bought it with 40 thousand on it and I paid 3 grand for it.I've only had it for 2 months now but I've put 4 thousand miles on it with no problems.

99 was the first year for the PI motors, not 2001. and i wouldn't say taxi's get the best maintenance, but they do still hold up pretty well. these 4.6 mod motors are beast if you take care of em. got a 99 f150 with a 4.6 w/ 155k on the clock and its still goin strong. biggest mecahincal problems i've had with it were a busted heater core, plugs/wires, and a finicky fuel pump (which is the only thing i haven't gotten around to replacing yet cuz the damn thing still works)

Now to your original question, I would always go for the one with lower miles. Under 4k is a pretty good price, even for the higher mileage. Go for the 2000.

EDIT: I wouldn't go for a 5.0 SN95, unless it was a cobra, and even still would be hesitant. There's gotta be a reason that only lasted for two years..

Solid info guys...On LS1.com I could always get someone to check a car out for me if I happened to be too far away (def. pay his/her gas and for his/her time). Do we have the same kind of camaraderie on here or am I too much of a newbie? lol!

yeah Ford couldnt get them to meet the new emission and NHV requirements... and they were shoving the 4.6 down everythings throat...

sorry but it takes a built supercharged 4.6 to get close to what i did with my 331 and others do on 347/363 motors... and thats just NA for the pushrods, not even throwing some juice in the top...

not mention they're a little lighter and have 1000X more room to work on too...

sorry i love my 4.6 but...

5.0(pushrod)> 4.6

+1 the sn95 body style was 94-98 and the 5.0 motor was 89-94 efi and before than was still a 5.0 just carbed so it didnt only last two years. also if one blows u[ there a dime a dozen to get and swap in. With that being said a 5.0 by itelf really insn't too much to get excited about. Your comparing a 331 and a 347 to a 4.6 which both have more ci than a 5.0 and your saying it doesnt come close. Neither of those motors are 5.0s anymore... just pointing it out not tryin to be a d!ck

no im just saying build a nice supercharged 4.6, and then do a DART 363 and see which one comes out on top...

most mod guys go for the blower, most 5.0 guys go for the cubic inches

5.0 was EFI from 86-95 btw, most Cali models in 86-up, the rest in 88-up IIRC

btw, FWIW, im going NA with my 4.6 just to prove a point to all the LS/LT circle-jerkers around here.

my car has a "I <3 Haters" sticker on it for a reason

If properly maintaned the 4.6s will last a very long time and take a lot of abuse, taxi caps and police cars are proof enough
