Default 5th gen axle assembly swap to a 99 gt

hey guys! my first post after buying my first mustang!
so i just bought myself a 99 mustang gt last weekend, everything looked great. after 2 test drives everything checked out perfectly. Then the worst happened. On my 200 mile drive home after purchasing the car, the engine developed a tick and the differential started to fall apart. Now my first question is, is it possible to swap out the rear end with the rear end from a 2005-2011 mustang? the cheapest used rear end from a 99-04 i can find is 800 bucks. or i could get a brand new 05-11 axle assembly for 1300. id much rather get a brand enw one if i could. any help?

your local mechanic is an idiot! There is nothing wrong with rebuilding the rear end also a perfect time to put 3.73 or 4.10 gears in

Agreed. All the parts for the rebuild including gears and all bearings are only $300. It should be easy if you don't do it yourself to find labor for less then $500.

Craigslist in Minneapolis has a used one with 78k on it for $400. $800 is way to much.

Did you buy that car from a dealer? Lemon laws exist, i would be makin them pay for it, that a pretty catastrophic fail after just buying it.

it wasnt from a dealer, and i bought it out of state. So apparently the lemon law doesnt apply to me because i didnt have it inspected in their state after i bought it. Pretty stupid if you ask me. But anyways, i live in Maine and its kind of hard to find someone that will tear the rear end apart and rebuild it. I guess it would be easier to look for a new mechanic wouldt it? haha

I would definitely go to a different mechanic. He sounds more like a parts changer then a mechanic anyway. Find someone to rebuild it and throw in some 3:73s or 4:10s.

thanks for the advice! i found a guy that works on muscle cars for a living, so he was more then happy to change it out and tear my engine apart. I'm definitely going 4.10's with a nice new tuner

good to hear you found some one to work on it. Its kind of a PITA if you are changing gears and don't know what you are doing but its not impossible. I did my last year. I was going to recommend going to a 4x4 off road shop if you didn't find anybody else. 4.10s are awesome I loved mine. Good luck getting it all going again. These cars are awesome. You will love it once you get it up and running again.
