Default 2001 Mustang Bullitt GT problem

I got in her today and replaced the air filter and took it for a drive. As soon as I get going I notice that the speedo isn't working. Later the odometer goes blank and it gives me a check engine soon light, and the traction control button stays lit. It get it back home and take the negative side of the battery off for a couple min and the odometer comes back and the check engine light goes away, but the speedo still doesnt work. All that I have done to her recently is change the steering wheel (maybe a connection that I missed??) and changed the air filter. The battery has been dead for a couple weeks (my son left the passenger side door open without me knowing). I have had to jump it a couple times and today was the first time I was able to drive it and try and recharge it.

Any idea what is going on?

Don't think this will solve it completely but you should clean your MAF.

That the odometer works and the speedometer does not indicate a problem in the instrument cluster itself as they are both driven by the same signal from the PCM.

You can use the instrument cluster diagnostic mode to see the speed displayed digitally on the odometer--if the speed is displayed then it is an issue with the actual gauge or the cluster's wiring or microprocessor...

You think the battery could be bad? The speed sensor on the tranny is bad maybe?

The battery could be bad, test it.

If the sensor at the tranny were bad the odometer would not work...

It went blank, but came back on after I unplugged the negative side of the battery.

What would cause the traction control button to stay on?

Changed the battery and speedo still doesnt work. I am guessing it is the speed sensor on the tranny. Anyone know the part number and where on the tranny it is located?

Cliff:

I did the speedo in the diagnostic program, and the speed was not displayed and the trip doesnt work either. I have ordered a new VSS and will see if that fixes it.
