2002 gt 38,000 miles
pulled it out of the garage today to do some work on the truck and when i went back in i noticed oil spots on the floor under where the rear diff would sit. i drive the car once or twice a week so im concerned that there is a seal back there that may have gone bad, around the where the drive shaft goes in? i lifted it up and look and i could not tell where it was comming from. plug, diff cover, or shaft seal? anyone have any input, thank you in advance.

Probably the diff cover because I would think if it was the shaft seal it would run down the back of the diff before falling to the ground and you would see the oil .


when you say you coudn't tell where it was coming from was it because there is oil all over the diff area or none at all?

i should have clarified, i couldn't tell where it was coming from because there was oil, dirt, and road grime all in between the diff cover to the shaft. the bottom of the diff was well coated with just black crap. it a clean car all over, and its weird to see this.

I would get some degreaser and spray all over the diff and wait a day or 2 and check it again. you should be able to tell where to leak is that way.

mine was doing the same, i wiped it off though and it seems to have stopped.. if it continues ill get it rebuilt again.

I had mine rebuilt in 2008 with carbon clutch disks and it was good for 3+ years 25k+ miles. May need to have it done again though because it seems to slip only 1 wheel when going right + minor leak.

i sprayed it down when i found it so i will keep a close eye on it. im probably going to add some oil and see if iv lost alot too.

The first step with any kind of diff leak is to check and make sure the breather om the rear end isnt clogged. If it is when pressure builds up its gonna push oil past the seals.

Yeah, there is a little vent that can get clogged, and if it does, the pressure will build a create a leak. I would also check that first as stated above.

where on the differential is this breather hole located?
