Default Newbie Looking to buy 1996-2004 GT

Hi I am new to the forum. I have always been a Ford Truck enthusiast and I have always owned a Ford pickup. I currently have a 2007 F150 with the 5.4 Triton and love it, but that model year truck also has some common problems with them. My post here is just to simply ask if there is any common mechanical problems, window problems, or any other issues with these model year Mustang.

I am wanting to buy one with less then 100,000 miles, equipped with the 4.6 V8, and preferably a 5 speed. I know the F150's with the 2 valve per cylinder modular engines had issues with "spitting" out spark plugs so I am guessing the Mustangs also suffer from this.

I was also wondering what type of gas mileage to expect with a stock 4.6, driving mostly highway. My 1995 40th anniversary T-bird (which just died after 260,000 miles) would get about 22-26 MPG depending on driving conditions. I hope the GT can match this. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

Steve

I have an 04 gt with 221,000 miles. I havent had it very long but it runs great!! I did have to replace the intake manifold on it because of a crack in it which seems to be a problem with these engines. Other than that I have had no problem at all out of it. Mine is a 5 speed and I get an average of 23 mpg. I drive about 85% highway and 15% city. I hope you find one and fall in love with it. They are an addiction!

Look for an 99-04 with the pi engine and yes that type of mileage is very possible with the mustang with factory gearing. My mustang and 96tbird get close to the same mileage its a little lower on my stang 23-24mpg but it has a supercharger and 3.73 gears.

unfortunately the spark plug problem did exist in the 96-03 cars, however in 04 ford fixed the issue with 8 threads per spark plug hole in the heads. even when they do pop, they are a relatively easy fix.

You seem like you are in the same situation I was in. I have a 2008 F150 and just bought a 2001 true blue bullitt last year with 86,000 miles for 8995.00.

99-04 for performance 94-98 for looks is my opinion. Of you get a 96-98 look for one with a PI headswap already. Or for the price range difference i would look for a 96-98 cobra most power out of the group and pure sex body style.
